Fraction Friday Feast!

2nd Feb 2025

When does maths get even better? When there is food involved!  What a class of professional chefs we have in P5/6F.  Many beautiful ingredients were brought in by all of us.  Mrs Fulton’s 14 aprons were well used! We had fun exploring food, textures, flavours and of course, investigating FRACTIONS!

Apart from improving our culinary skills, we had the opportunity to comprehend equivalent fractions and size of fractions- which is smaller and which is larger and exploring denominators and numerators.  Initially, We made use of our magnetic fractions as well as cuisinere rods to help us understand equal parts.  This practical food lesson was excellent in helping us connect patterns when doubling and halving fractions.

The first part of the video captures stills of us making jam sandwiches which were washed down with our HOT CHOCOLATE as part of NATIONAL HOT CHOC DAY, which was part of our well being Wednesday activity, combined.  The latter part of the video is fantastic as it captures many conversations from business names, to where IS my pepperoni and of course exploring our mathematical language ( which is what this lesson was really all about- WE PROMISE!).

A note from the teacher -

I was overwhelmed at just how involved the children were the entire day.  They were so kind to each other, sharing, helping and encouraging.  This is indicative of how this class conduct themselves daily.  Catherine and Martina - we couldn’t have done this without you, in the short amount of time available.  Boys and girls, you were awesome in how you all got the classroom back to normal!  I’d cook with you all anyday!

Mrs Fulton.
